Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens, also known as 'Zanessa', both live in California and have been together for more than 3 years (some people don't know that they actually started dating in the middle of 2007).
They met when they were auditioning for the lead roles of 'High
School Musical', the movie that made them how they are today. They had
been paired and had not separated for the auditions because of their
chemistry.
Zac first saw Vanessa at the premier of 'Thunderbirds' (V played as
Tin-tin) and said that he had wanted to work with her, though, they had not
seen each other until the auditions. During HSM, when filming 'We're All in this Together', Zanessa had an accidental kiss when Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth) missed his cue for interrupting the couple. It was filmed but it didn't make the cut.
Several months after HSM, the cast went off to do the HSM tour. Zac couldn't do it because he was filming the remake of 'Hairspray' as Link Larkin. That was why Zac looked different in HSM2; he had to dye his hair black and gained several pounds to fit the part.
Also after HSM, Vanessa signed with Hollywood records and started her first album, entitled 'V'. It can stand for either Vanessa or Variety (there are different genres of music in her album). She performed 'Come Back to Me', 'Say Ok' and her favourite, 'Let's Dance' for the HSM tour. Vanessa also asked Zac to be her love interest on her music video for 'Say Ok', in which he said yes to.
HSM2 went by and so did Vanessa's nude photo scandal. Sometime in the middle of 2007, the couple had started dating, but keeping it on the down-low. Since the scandal, Zac and Vanessa had an on-and-off relationship. The photo was actually taken when she was sixteen (before she auditioned for HSM) and had accidently leaked.
Most people thought their relationship was over until the paps saw the two of them in Hawaii, taking a well deserved vacation together.HSM3 was set and Zanessa was stronger than ever. The long kissing scene that they had to do in 'Can I Have This Dance' was not fake at all; in fact Kenny (Ortega, director of all three HSM's) had to cut it short.
It was a tearful goodbye on the last day of HSM3. Though the teriffic Trilogy was now over, Zanessa are still together. They hope to work again side by side in the future.

'Zac. You give me strength, always have my back, and thank you for everything. You're amazing.' ~ Vanessa Hudgens
'Vanessa caught my eye straight away. She simply outshines all other girls because of her strong personality. I don’t know if I believe in love at first sight, but I do believe in two people having chemistry straight away. I don’t know what it was with Vanessa but we kind of clicked from the very beginning. She is not just a lovely girl, she is also a sexy and desirable woman! Vanessa is just a wonderful person. I can laugh and talk with her and, most of all, we have loads of fun!' ~ Zac Efron.

"It’s
just something really wonderful that the whole world & his brother
can bear witness to our love. Vanessa and I are happy together. That’s
all that counts. We just don’t have anything to hide. When you’re in a
relationship, appearances & what’s happening on the outside aren’t
important:
it’s about whether you fit together deep down inside." ~ Zac Efron (Vanity Fair 6-09).
